Functional Capacity Assessments

A Functional Capacity Assessment is an evaluation used to determine an individual’s physical, cognitive, and emotional abilities and limitations when performing specific tasks related to their daily living. We aim to understand how a person’s impairments or disabilities impact their overall functioning and independence and identify areas where the individual may require support or modifications to improve their performance and quality of life.

The assessment looks at several components, including:

  1. Physical Abilities: This aspect of the assessment evaluates an individual’s strength, range of motion, balance, coordination, endurance, and mobility. It helps determine their capacity to perform tasks such as walking, reaching, lifting, and other physical activities.
  2. Cognitive Abilities: The assessment may include cognitive tests to evaluate memory, attention, problem-solving, and other cognitive functions. This is particularly relevant for individuals with cognitive impairments resulting from brain injuries, stroke, or neurological conditions.
  3. Emotional and Psychological Factors: Our occupational therapists also consider emotional and psychological aspects, as mental health can significantly impact a person’s ability to function independently and engage in meaningful activities.
  4. Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): The evaluation often includes an assessment of an individual’s ability to perform essential self-care tasks, such as bathing, dressing, eating, grooming, and using the restroom.
  5. Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs): This component assesses more complex activities necessary for independent living, such as cooking, managing finances, housekeeping, and using transportation.

Our occupational therapists use the results of the Functional Capacity Assessment to personalise treatment plans and interventions. We recommend appropriate strategies, recommend assistive technology, suggest environmental modifications, and work together with other healthcare professionals and caregivers to support the individual’s functional needs.
